At Vamos Honduras, our mission is to support communities in Honduras that are often unseen, underserved, and deeply marginalized. One such place is Montaña de la Flor, home to the Tolupan people—an Indigenous ethnic group native to Honduras who historically resisted Spanish colonization and, to this day, have preserved much of their language, culture, and traditions.

Who Are the Tolupan People?

The Tolupan people live in relative isolation, not by choice alone, but due to generations of exclusion and lack of access to basic resources. Approximately 450 families are scattered across several tribes in the Montaña de la Flor region. With no electricity, no potable water, no medical services, and no cellular signal, daily life is marked by extreme hardship.

The absence of resources and institutional support has contributed to severe social and humanitarian challenges, particularly affecting children and women. Food insecurity, untreated illnesses, and unsafe living conditions are part of everyday reality.

A Mission That Stayed When Others Could Not

In September, we learned about the work of Pastora Evangelina Enamorado and her family—missionaries who have chosen to live and serve full-time in Montaña de la Flor. Despite cultural barriers, danger, and isolation, they are currently the only missionaries who have remained consistently present in this region.

Today, they operate children’s feeding programs serving 77 children, reaching multiple tribes across the mountain.

Urgent Needs on the Ground

At present, the children’s meals rely almost entirely on fortified rice—prepared in different forms, but without access to adequate protein or nutritional variety. In addition, there is no access to basic medicines to treat common respiratory infections, intestinal illnesses, or other preventable conditions, especially during the rainy season.

Beyond food and medicine, families are also in need of:

  • Clothing and shoes

  • Diapers and blankets

  • Basic hygiene supplies

How Vamos Honduras Helped

In response to this urgent situation, Vamos Honduras donated $1,000 USD in partnership with Herencia Missions, directly supporting emergency food and hygiene assistance for families in Montaña de la Flor.

Thanks to this support, 40 families from one of the tribes will receive:

  • Food kits including essential items they normally cannot access

  • Hygiene and cleaning supplies for personal and household use

  • Basic household items and snacks for children

Local volunteers worked tirelessly—cleaning storage spaces, transporting supplies, and going door to door to collect and distribute donations—demonstrating the power of community-led action.

Current Situation & Ongoing Challenges

While supplies have been purchased and prepared, severe road damage caused by heavy rains has made transportation into Montaña de la Flor extremely difficult and dangerous. The area is only accessible through rugged jungle paths, and for safety reasons, volunteers cannot enter without proper authorization, planning, and secure transport.

As a result, the most immediate need right now is safe mobilization of supplies into the region.

Looking Ahead

The needs in Montaña de la Flor are ongoing. Looking forward, the community urgently requires:

  • Regular nutritional support for children, including protein

  • Basic medicines and emergency medical equipment

  • Training for a local community member in basic medical response

  • A future emergency medical brigade

At Vamos Honduras, we believe in walking alongside trusted local partners, supporting sustainable, dignified solutions, and responding with both compassion and responsibility. Our involvement in Montaña de la Flor reflects that commitment.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to stand with the Tolupan people—and we invite others to join us in continuing this work.

Together, even in the most remote places, hope can take root.
